Merrill Glustrom: Good move by City Council backing carbon feePublished on: Wednesday, August 2, 2017
As a member of the Citizens Climate Lobby, I extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the Boulder City Council, and especially council member Sam Weaver, for lending their support to passage of a revenue neutral carbon fee. The fee is assessed at the point of extraction, likely passed on to consumers with their purchases, and returned in full measure to consumers through a credit. A price signal is sent to the market place that speeds the transition to renewable energy.
The advantages of a “carbon fee and dividend” are multiple: In addition to sending an important price signal, the approach allows the market to manage the transition to clean energy rather than government regulation. This appeals to conservatives as well as progressives, and we need both sides of the political spectrum if we are to address the challenges of climate change.
A carbon fee and dividend has the support of Republican icons like George Shultz and Hank Paulson, and conservative writers like Charles Krauthammer and David Brooks. The plan also has the support of the Climate Solutions Caucus in Congress. To join the caucus, a member of Congress must have someone on the other side of the aisle join at the same time. There are currently 50 members of the caucus and growing.
Addressing the challenges of climate change is not just about Boulder, but Boulder taking leadership to inspire other communities around the country. That’s why Boulder is working to establish a municipal utility, why Boulder supports the Paris agreement, is committed to providing 100 percent of our energy from renewable sources, and why Boulder backs the revenue neutral carbon fee.
Our City Council is one of the most hard-working, knowledgeable, and professional municipal governing bodies in the country. You make us very proud!
