Patrick Casey: Support the environment through the muni

As a millennial, my future is anything but certain, and it’s hard to empathize with anyone that’s not fighting for a cleaner, more sustainable world. When I see two massive hurricanes and dozens of wildfires in one month approach places with people I care about, it scares me. I’m scared because I know if we stay “business as usual” each year after will be worse. Boulder is on the verge of doing something monumental to combat climate change by splitting from Xcel Energy. The goal to reach 100 percent renewable energy by 2030 is huge! We can’t do it if we stay with Xcel.

Personally, I don’t save for retirement. I don’t save because if nothing is done about climate change I may not have a retirement. That money I could be saving may disappear by then due to economic collapse brought about by famine, war, and resource scarcity. I’d rather use my money now to go see Venice while it’s still above sea level, or check out Greenland while there’s still an ice sheet. “What do I do with my money” is just one of the questions my generation and those that follow have to ask ourselves on a daily basis.

Boulder’s desire to combat climate change gives me hope, however. I’m holding my breath for Nov. 7 and hoping that everyone votes yes on 2L and 2P. Creating our own municipality is about more than a minuscule tax we’ll have to cough up. It’s about giving your children a life where there don’t have to be wars over food, clean air, and water. I could still retire in Florida if I wanted. It’s about going on vacation and observing historical sites without a submarine. Please vote yes for 2L and 2P. My generation, nay the environment needs a win.
