Peter Mayer: See the MUNI throughPublished on: Tuesday, April 18, 2017
Xcel has presented Boulder with two coal-fired turds labeled “final best offer” and “partnership.” These humiliating, turn-tail exit ramps are laden with carbon and are unacceptable. City Council should ignore this noisome distraction and proceed with the PUC process. That is what the voters asked for, not these foul alternatives.
The environment is under attack. The time to stand up for a clean energy future, is now. The nation is watching. Let’s put out best case for a muni to the PUC and hear what they have to say. Then we can decide what is the best course forward.
To give up in any way at this moment, would be a pitiful cop-out. Putting Xcel’s offers to a vote in November would give us two terrible choices and force upon Boulder’s grumpy voters yet another stupid, expensive, polarizing, and unnecessary campaign about the muni. Neither offer is acceptable, so why vote between Xcel’s two heaping piles?
Boulder supports clean energy and the muni is our best chance to do that right now. We must show resolve and leadership to keep moving forward towards our goal of reduced carbon emissions and renewable energy.
Boulder citizens knew this was going to be a tough fight from the beginning. We knew it was going to be expensive to defeat a corporate giant and take control of our own energy future. We have not given up our goal of clean, renewable, municipal energy. Let’s see this through.
